‘Awarding NCR titles now won’t change mindsets’

Tawau DAP candidate Chan Foong Hin who is aiming to help the party retain its seat has accused BN of incompetency in Sabah

TAWAU: A late bid by state Barisan Nasional (BN) to issue land titles to native customary rights land owners, although much appreciated is not likely to change the minds of voters in Sabah.

Alluding to widely reported news of the Sabah government’s “sudden” issuance of land titles keeping BN candidates “busy”, Sri Tanjung DAP candidate Chan Foong Hin said it’s time for BN to “take a rest and step aside”.

BN has not been able to bring in much development to the state despite having been around for over 50 years and it is not because the state was poor.

“Sabah being the richest state should have years ago had quality highways connecting every district, no blackouts , with electricity and water reaching the rural people.

“This BN had failed year after year and the people want a change,” he said during his campaign talks yesterday.

He said BN always tells the people to improve themselves with education and economic wise but BN itself has failed to change for the better and for the good of the people.

The ruling coalition, he said was always finding excuses failing to deliver on its promises.

“DAP, PKR and PAS only wants what is best for the people, what the people deserve. We in Sabah promise to do our best if given the mandate to show what development is all about and what good governance is,” he said.

Chan said BN claimed Malaysia needs a strong and experienced government but where is Malaysia in terms of economy and development in the world standings?

“We in DAP, PKR and PAS say Malaysia need a strong clean and uncorrupted government to move ahead for the betterment of the people,” he said.

He accused BN politicians of only listening to the people and solving local community problems that have dragged for years on the spot when possible or promising to solve it after getting another mandate.

“You suddenly see there are villages land grants approved after waiting for so long, roads repaired and so on,” he said.

“Don’t accuse us of making empty promises as we have not yet been given the chance by the people to govern the country. Only after that then people can judge whether we could do a better job,” he said.

Chan, who is hoping to retain the seat that DAP won in 2008, said it time for the ruling coalition to make way for new leaders to show their capability to serve and provide what the people want especially in the rural areas.
