Written by: FMT Staff | Free Malaysia Today
Three Sarawak Chinese associations have chastised state DAP secretary Chong Chieng Jen for questioning their sincerity.

KUCHING: On the eve of a politically defining polls, Sarawak DAP came under heavy attack from three Chinese grassroots associations here and in Kota Samarahan for criticising their resolutions and likening it to that of the Sarawak United Peoples party (SUPP).

DAP is heavily reliant on the Chinese community for suppport and currently has an edge over SUPP in five of the seven parliamentary seats

Yesterday the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS), Federation of Kuching and Samarahan Divisions Chinese Associations and Federation of Kuching Division Community Associations Sarawak jointly slammed DAP for “humiliating” the intelligence of the respective associations’ leadership.

Speaking to the media here, they demanded that state party secretary Chong Chieng Jen publically apologise for equating the associations resolution to SUPP’s manifesto.

Said the Federation of Kuching and Samarahan Divisions Chinese Associations president Lu Kim Yong: “We hope that he will not involve us in his political rally with SUPP, which has nothing to do with us the Chinese-based associations.”

ACCCIS president Wee Kok Tiong was also furious with Chong’s statements which were part of his ongoing political ceramahs.

He said initially they had thought that Chong had made a “slip of the tongue” mistake but his consistent malaigning of the association had compelled them to act.

“His (Chong’s) recent political speeches has hurt many associations.
“The first time he said it, we all felt that it might be a slip of tongue. Unfortunately Chong repeated made similar statements in another ‘ceramah’.

“What was he trying to do?. He is questioning our sincerity. This is too much.

“There is no way we can allow Chong to deny our efforts to seek solutions for the communities through our resolutions.

“We want him to retract his statement and openly apologise,” he said.

‘We are not insincere’
According to Wee there was nothing political about the association’s resolutions, which were aimed at seeking solutions from the government on comunity issues.

Also condemning Chong was the Federation of Kuching Division Community Associations Sarawak chief Sim Swee Yong.

Sim said it was “very unfair” that he ridiculed the resolutions of association.

“Who is he to say that we are not sincere in our resolutions to seek implementation?

“It is okay if Chong does not encourage or help us, but we do not need his unfair statement.” he said.
