What happens on polling day?

Written by: K Pragalath | Free Malaysia Today

PETALING JAYA: Polling day will take place on Sunday from 8am to 5pm. The polling process would take place in schools and community halls that serve as polling centres.

Voters can check their voting information via the SPR website. The information available includes your voting stream. This information can also be checked at EC booths set up nearby the polling centres.

At the polling centre, a polling clerk would verify the voter’s identity by checking the identification card details and the registered voter list. The polling clerk would also ensure that the voter’s left index finger is unmarked.

Once this is done, another clerk at the next table would mark the voter’s left index finger with ink.

The third clerk would give the voters two ballot papers which are parliament and state seat.

This applies to all states except Federal Territories Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Labuan and Sarawak. Sarawak had conducted their state polls.

The voter can then make his/her choice at a voting cubicle by marking ‘X’ next to the candidate’s name within the box.

Then the voter is required to fold his/her ballot paper and slip it into respective transparent box.

The entire process would be watched by EC workers and polling agents who are representatives of the candidates.

Polling session would end at 5 pm.

Votes from the early voters would be counted as early as 4pm. Votes at the polling centres would be counted by the polling centre’s chief of staff. The counting process also would be observed by the polling agents.

The total number of votes would be calculated and announced by the election manager for the parliamentary constituency.
